Cheyenne, the State Capital, is located in Laramie County County and is the county seat. It lies in the state's southeastern corner along Interstate 80, near Francis E. Warren Air Force Base.

In 1867 Cheyenne got its start when the Union Pacific Railroad arrived on its march to the west coast. The townsite was surveyed by General Grenville Dodge and named after a local Indian Nation. Settlement was so swift that the town earned the nickname Magic City of the Plains.

Today Cheyenne, population 55,608, is a political, economic and cultural center of the northern plains. The city's largest employment sectors are government, trade and the service industry.

A famous annual event is July's Cheyenne Frontier Days with rodeo competition, tours through authentic Wild Horse Gulch, featuring costumed townspeople; and Indian Village, celebrating Native American culture. A museum displays the event's long history.
