Sparta is located in Monroe County (of which it is the county seat), between Viroqua and Black River Falls along Hwy 27 on the banks of the La Crosse River near Tomah, La Crosse, and West Salem.

The historical development of Sparta is seen in its architecture with buildings dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
