Lake Michigan is lined with lofty clay bluffs at its southern end, as well as sand and pebble beaches attractive to vacationers. Its north end is characterized by the Door County Peninsula with 250 miles of shore, artist communities, fruit orchards and several state parks. Lighthouse buffs will find their time well spent here; there are more in Door County than any other in the country. Also at the north end is Green Bay and its namesake city, famed as the home of the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame and Wisconsin's oldest community.

Kenosha offers beaches, parks, a scenic waterfront and deep-water fishing. Port Washington is noted for its stately lighthouse and picturesque harbor, inviting sportfishing on Lake Michigan. Shipbuilding is carried on at Manitowoc, also home of the Great Lakes' largest maritime museum. Ship construction is practiced in Sturgeon Bay as well, which also boasts a microbrewery, restaurants and shops.

More than 1,000 square miles in Oconto County offer numerous recreational opportunities. In addition, the town of Oconto is home to the Beyer Historic Home Museum, which exhibits artifacts sifted from the nearby 5,000 year-old Copper Culture State Park.

Swift rivers and streams attract canoeing and whitewater-rafting buffs in Marinette County. South of the town of Marinette is the Peshtigo Museum, housing evidence of the nation's worst firestorm which destroyed the Peshtigo logging town and vast forest acreage in 1871.
