Racine is located in Racine County and it is the county seat. It lies on the shore of Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Kenosha, along Highway 32.
Racine was founded in 1834 on a harbor and lake front, and became a city in 1848. In downtown Racine is Monument Square. Known originally as Haymarket Square, its name was changed on July 4, 1884, Racine's 50th anniversary. That day, the Vermont marble memorial was dedicated. The 61-foot monument was erected in honor of Racine Civil War veterans.
The population estimate for 1998 was 81,095. Racine is an ethnically diverse community. Festival Park, on the shore of Lake Michigan, is host to many ethnic festivals and events. Downtown Racine is home to several museums and galleries. Other attractions are the 112-foot Wind Point Lighthouse; the Malt House, home of the Haylofters, Wisconsin's oldest community theater group; and the Racine Lakefront Trolleys.
