La Crosse is located in La Crosse County (of which it is the county seat) north of Prairie Du Chien, between Tomah and Rochester, MN along Interstate 90 on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 49,075, a decrease of 2,065 since 1990.
