Chippewa Falls is located in Chippewa County (of which it is the county seat) within the Central Region, northeast of Eau Claire along US Highway 53 on the banks of the Chippewa River near Lake Wissota.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 12,708, a decrease of 41 since 1990.
