Wheeling

Wheeling lies along the Ohio River and the scenic portion of I-70, which continues into Pennsylvania to the east and Ohio to the west. The city occupies 11.2 square miles and the mean annual temperature is 50.5 degrees.

The last battle of the American Revolution was fought in Wheeling on September 11-13, 1782, when Fort Henry was attacked by a force of 40 British soldiers and 260 Indians. News of the peace had not yet reached the outpost. Ebenezer and Silas Zane, who founded the city in 1769, led the defending forces. When Virginia seceded from the Union, delegates from the western counties met at Wheeling and made it their capital.

Tour the Point Overlook Museum, West Virginia Independence Hall or Wymer's "General Store" Museum, located inside the Wheeling Artisan Center. Walk across the 150-year-old Wheeling Suspension Bridge ot take a stroll through Victorian Old Town.
