Charles Town

Located in Jefferson County (Eastern Region), Charles Town was named for George Washington's brother, who laid out the town in 1786. Streets bear the names of Washington's family members.


After a raid on Harper's Ferry, John Brown was tried and hanged for treason in Charles Town. Charles Town marks the West Virginia terminus of the scenic portion of Hwy 9, which runs eastward into Virginia.
From Charles Town it is 6 miles to the Virginia border placing it as part of the Washington metro area.

Home of the Charles Town Races, a thoroughbred horse racing track, and also home of the all-new Charles Town Gaming featuring on-site slot machines. Charles Town is experiencing growth from the Loudon County, VA, and nearby Frederick, MD, area families, who are deciding to make Jefferson County their home. There is a MARC, (Mass Transit), train station just outside of Charles Town, making the commute to the DC area easier and faster.
