Spokane is the seat of Spokane County. It is located on the Spokane River and is crossed by Interstate 90.
Early settlers quickly spread the word that a trip to Spokane House meant warm hospitality as well as profitable business dealings. The little trading post, erected in 1810, was the Pacific Northwest's first non-Native American habitation. Spokane became the state's second-largest city while retaining its pioneer spirit.
Today Spokane, population 195,629, is the major urban center and cultural hub of the Inland Northwest, a sprawling lumber, mining and farming area comprising of eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana.
Fairchild Air Force Base is one of the city's largest employers. Gonzaga University calls Spokane home. Points of interest include Riverside State Park, the site of Spokane House; and the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture.
