Richmond

Richmond is located 105 miles southwest of Washington D.C. It is situated along Interstate 95 on the banks of the James River, near Pocahontas State Forest and State Park.

The 2000 Census reported the city's population at 197,790, a loss of 5,266 over 1990.

The capital of Virginia, Richmond has experienced the renovation of several historic districts in the downtown area. A walking tour along a canal features locks at Byrd & 12th streets, built in 1854. The warehouses of Shockoe Slip have been restored and the streets re-cobbled; the neighborhood is now a feature of Richmond's dining and night life.

This one time capital of the Confederacy is a major destination for experiencing Civil War history. Hollywood Cemetery, the Museum of the Confederacy, as well as battlefield parks and trails, are among the many attractions. Statues along Monument Avenue were originally erected in 1890, at which time the Robert E. Lee Monument was dedicated.

Richmond is part of the Richmond-Petersburg, Virginia metro area.
