Newport News

The Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, a leader in the production of ocean liners, as well as military vessels, was established in 1886. Soldiers leaving for both world wars embarked from this city; those returning from World War I were honored with the Victory Arch on 25th Street, commemorating all American veterans. Newport News is located in the 'Hampton Roads' are of southeastern Virginia; Nansemond National Wildlife Refuge and Seashore State Park are nearby. Newport News is part of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro area.
