Lynchburg

Lynchburg is located 52 miles east of Roanoke, along Highway 29. It is situated in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Central Virginia. The James River and Holliday Lake State Park are nearby.

The Lynchburg area reflects a varied history which includes Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest and the Civil War with its end at Appomattox. In 1757, John Lynch started a ferry service at Lynch's Landing across the James. In 1786, the Virginia General Assembly established Lynchburg as a town. Today, Lynchburg boats five National Register Historic Districts with some of the most notable architecture on the east coast.

The city comprises a population of more than 96,000, including the suburbs of Madison Heights, Timberlake and Forest. Companies such as General Electric, Ericsson, Framatone, Babcock & Wilcox, and J. Crew are located in Lynchburg. The Lynchburg area also is home to four area private colleges and a public community college.
