Lexington

Lexington is located in Rockbridge County 40 miles NW of Lynchburg along Highway 11 near the George Washington National Forest in the Central Region of the state. Restored downtown Lexington includes the Alexander-Withrow House, one of the few buildings that survived the 1796 fire that raged through town; Lawyers' Row and Court House Square were laid out as part of the original town in 1778. Of scenic interest is Goshen Pass Natural Area, 15 miles northwest on Hwy 39. Here the southwest face of Little North Mountain drops sharply from 3,600 feet to the Maury River, about 1,800 feet below. Rhododendrons, mountain laurel, pines and dogwoods grow profusely along the river and the surrounding mountains; Stagecoach Pass is enjoyed for its recreational acitivities.
