Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is located 48 miles SW of Washington D.C. along Interstate 95 on the banks of the Rapidan River in the Eastern Region of the state. Fredericksburg was officially founded in 1728, even though settlers had built a fort as early as 1676. Its location in a valley at the head of navigation on the Rappahannock River led to the city's becoming a prosperous port. The Fredericksburg Market Square Fair, held in May, features Colonial and contemporary craftsmen, preservation activities, music, food and children's activities. Two historic scenic routes run from Fredericksburg -- Hwy 3 leads down the Northern Neck past several historic sites of interest, and Hwy 17 follows the Rappahannock River to Tappahannock and Gloucester, crosses the York River and goes on to Williamsburg via the Colonial Parkway.
