Manchester is located in Bennington County, 25 miles north of Benningtonalong Highway 7A, the Ethan Allen Highway. It lies on the banks of the Batten Kill River near the New York state line. Manchester, in the southwest part of Vermont, is a year-round resort area. Manchester proper boasts marble sidewalks and elm-bordered streets, and is primarily residential. Manchester Center is essentially the business area. The third community is Manchester Depot.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,033, an increase of 90 since 1990. Manchester is one of two municipalities in the state with a local sales tax.
