Burlington is located in Chittenden County. It is the county seat. As Vermont's largest city, Burlington is located on slopes above Lake Champlain and its eastern edge is situated along Interstate 89. It serves an important role for transportation on the lake, as well as being a principal port of air entry on the U.S.-Canada border. The major employers are International Business Machines, makers of semiconductor products, Fletcher Allen Health Care Health Care, and IDX Systems, which produces medical software.
The area was first settled in 1775, but most of the inhabitants left at the time of the Revolutionary War. The city's oldest section is along Battery Street near the lakefront. The grave of Ethan Allan, a hero of the American Revolution, is located in Greenmount Cemetery. The University of Vermont is also in town.
Burlington is part of the Burlington, Vermont metro area.
