Brandon is located in Rutland County, 16 miles north of Rutland along Highway 7 near the Otter River.

Chartered in 1761, Brandon became an important saw and grist mill town, with mills operating on over 20 sites. Local iron ore was exploited in the manufacture of stoves. When the railroad came in 1835, Brandon workers built railroad cars. Marble quarrying was a significant activity.

Splendid 19th century houses exist in Brandon as well as numerous other historic buildings in the downtown area. In fact, 243 buildings in downtown Brandon are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A self-guided historic walking tour is recommended. Brandon is also the birthplace of 19th-century statesman Stephen A. Douglas.

Many biking opportunities and several covered bridges are two of Brandon's attractions. Fort Ticonderoga is a short ferry ride across Lake Champlain.
