Park City

Park City is in Summit County, east of Salt Lake City. It lies near Heber City on Hwy 224 near its junction with Hwy 248.

In 1868, silver was discovered in the area that would become Park City. In addition to silver, the town became known for its gold, lead and zinc mining. Park City became official in 1884.

Twenty-six medal events and more than 78 competitions at Utah Olympic Park, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort made Park City the centerpiece of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

Today Park City, population 6,504 (est. 1998), is a tourist resort based on skiing. It is one of Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival venues. In addition, the Park City Film Series, shown at the Jim Santy Auditorium, features Sundance crowd-pleasers, independent and out-of-the-mainstream cinema. The Summit Institute promotes Western culture through regional artists, writers, musicians and scholars. Park City Historical Society & Museum exhibits the area's history, dating to 40,000 B.C.
