Mason is located northeast of San Antonio between Brady and Fredericksburg on US 87 near the Llano River.
The seat of Mason County, it grew under protection of Fort Mason, one of series of Texas frontier forts in rolling, scenic Hill country noted for camping, hunting and fishing. White-tailed deer and wild turkey attract hunters each fall and winter; fishing in the Llano River is a year round sport.
Historical interest centers around early Indians, a bloody feud known as the Mason County War, and the fort. Many homes and businesses in town are constructed of original-cut sandstone blocks from old Fort Mason.

Mason has been the largest town in its county for most of its history. Since 1900 its population has generally ranged between an estimated 1,200 and 2,000 people; the 1982 population was 2,153. The town is the center of the county for business, education, and social life.
In 1990 the population was 2,041.
