In Dakota Heritage & Lakes Region, Yankton is located in Yankton County (of which it is the county seat) southwest of Sioux Falls along US 81 on the banks of the missoriv} near [lklewisc, which forms the Nebraska state line there.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 14,325, an increase of 1,622 since 1990.
