Southern Region

The Southern area of South Carolina consists of three of the state's official tourism regions -- Historic Charleston, Low Country & Resort Islands, and Thoroughbred Country. In Historic Charleston a rich past is reflected through gas lamps that shine on cobblestone streets lined with boutiques and world-class restaurants. Excellent golf and pristine beaches are other key attractions of the region.

In the Low Country and Resort Islands Region, the marshes and sloughs abound with birds and alligators, and the streams that feed the wetlands are full of fish. Activities range from water sports, golf, tennis, cycling and beachcombing, to the arts, sightseeing and relaxing.

The western portion of the area, Thoroughbred Country is primarily a rural setting, offering visitors history, culture, natural attractions, paddling, golfing and shopping.
