Newport

Newport is the seat of Lincoln County, spread across a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and Yaquina Bay. It is located between Depoe Bay and Waldport along U.S. Highway 101, and also is close to the unincorporated areas of Otter Rock and Seal Rock.

In 1855, Newport began as fishing village, then was plotted in 1866 and developed as a resort with a coastal steamer route to San Francisco.

Today Newport, population 9,960, preserves the charm of the turn-of-the-century era in The Old Bay Front, a waterfront section of the town. Newport's location at the entrance of Yaquina Bay has made fishing an important industry. Commercial and charter fishing boats depart from the harbor. Numerous tourists also enjoy jetty fishing, crabbing and clamming in the area. Newport also is one of the most popular ocean diving areas in the state, and the county's governmental, cultural and educational center. Oregon Coast Aquarium, Newport Performing Arts Center and the Hatfield Marine Science Center are here.
