In Benton County and located on the Willamette River between the Coast Range Mountains to the west and the Cascades to the east, Corvallis lives up to its Latin name meaning "heart of the valley." Also situated north of Eugene, between Albany and Philomath along hwy 34.
This community is one of the state's leading centers of commerce, culture and education. Oregon State University is the source of much of the city's cultural and intellectual wealth, while farming, high-technology and lumber contribute to the material wealth. The Hatfield Marine Science Center (part of OSU) is located to the west in Newport. Also located in Corvallis are the major firms of CH2M Hill, Hewlett Packard, Evanite Fiber Corporation, Good Samaritan Hospital Corvallis, and The Corvallis Clinic.
Originally named Marysville, Corvallis was renamed by Joseph C. Avery in 1853 to avoid confusion with Marysville, California. Established in 1845, Corvallis has a variety of notable structures in its historic district.
