Carlton is located in Yamhill County, the heart of Oregon's Wine Regions. Situated between McMinnville and Yamhill, along Hwy 47 and the Yamhill River, the community is near the Willamette River.
In 1872, a railroad was built from Portland to St. Joe, but the train did not stop between the two stations. As a result, a flag stop was attempted and then a regular stop was established at what is now Carlton. This community was founded by Wilson Carl in 1899 and incorporated the same year.
The Carlton Country Christmas, in the first week of December, and the Carlton Fun Days, in the fourth weekend of June, are both popular events. Other attractions include several antique shops, Wennerberg Park, City Park and Pool, Bald Peak State Park, Nestucca River Recreation Area, Siuslaw National Forest and many wineries.
Carlton is part of the Portland-Vancouver, Oregon-WA metropolitan area.
