Bandon

Bandon-by-the-Sea is located in Coos County south of Coos Bay, between Coos Bay and Port Orford. It lies along Highway 101 on the banks of the Coquille River, near the shores of the Pacific Ocean, Bullards Beach State Park, Floras Lake, and Boice Park.

Named for Bandon, Ireland, the town was established during and after the gold rush of 1851. During the early 20th century, the only way one could get to Bandon was by aquatic transport. As a historic anecdote, much of the lumber used to rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake was supplied by Bandon.

Bandon has three annual events: the Cranberry Festival, Festival of Lights, and Seafood and Wine Festival. Other popular attractions include: Coquille Point, Face Rock Viewpoint State Park, Bandon Marsh, Coquille River Museum, Bandon Historical Society Museum and the Coquille River Lighthouse.

A favorite home base for fishermen, the Coquille River is known for its production of salmon and steelhead.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,566, an increase of 342 since 1990.

There also is a Bandon, Ireland.
