Toronto

Ontario's capital and largest city, Toronto is a mixture of old Victorian-Romanesque buildings and sleek glass and steel skyscrapers. Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, Toronto has become a major financial, industrial, and cultural center in Canada. The Toronto Stock Exchange is among the largest in North America in terms of volume; the area has one of the highest concentrations of manufacturing capabilities in the country; and it abounds with museums, theaters, and art centers. The Harbourfront Centre has been renovated and is now a showcase for culture, education, and recreation. It includes a waterfront promenade, a nautical center, the Queen's Quay Terminal, and theater and concert facilities. First visited by the Europeans in 1615, the area wasn't settled until 1749 when Fort Rouille was established by the French for fur trading. In 1834 the city was incorporated at Toronto.
