Newark

Newark is located in central Ohio in Licking County (of which it is the county seat) 25 miles east of Columbus on the banks of the North Fork of the Licking River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 48,245, an increase of 3,849 since 1990.

One interesting local attraction is the Newark Mound which is roughly in the shape of a turtle and has a rich aura of mysticism. They also demonstrate a possible coming together of several scientific disciplines (astronomy, geometry, iconography, metrology and mythology). Another anecdote about the area: it is said Johnny Appletree planted an orchard near here circa 1801.

Burning Tree Golf Course and Licking Springs Golf & Trout Club are public 18-hole layouts while Moundbuilders Country Club is a private club but with a reciprocal guest poilcy for members of other country clubs. This 6,700-yard course plays to a par of 71.

Local attractions include the National Heisey Glass Museum, the Ohio Indian Art Museum and the Dawes Arboretum. In addition, Ohio State University at Newark is located here.
