Marietta is located in southeastern Ohio in Washington County (of which it is the county seat) on the banks of the Ohio River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 14,857, a decrease of 169 since 1990.

Everyday outdoor recreation is close at hand in that the city is deep within the Wayne National Forest. In addition, the Muskingum River empties into the Ohio here.
