Bismarck

Bismarck, founded in 1872 and is the state's capital, is located in south central North Dakota in Burleigh County along I-94 on the banks of the Missouri River about 60 miles north of the South Dakota border.

The town at one time was named "Edwinton" after Edwin L. Johnson, who championed the construction of the trans-continental railroad. Edwinton was renamed Bismarck in 1873 after the German "Iron Chancellor."

Bismark today is the trading hub of a large agricultural region and also is a telecommunications and financial center. For those seeking advanced education, the city is home to the uofmary, bismarsc and the uttc.

Outdoor recreation can include outings for golfers at one of four courses in town. These include Riverwood Golf Course and Hawktree Golf Course, both public regulation-length 18-hole courses; the Tom O'Leary Golf Club, a shorter, par 68, 5,350-yard layout and Apple Creek Country Club, an 18-hole course open to members of other clubs.
