Central New Mexico, New Mexico, Tourism

The Central Region of New Mexico holds the bustling city of Albuquerque and its reminders of the old Route 66 on Central Avenue. In addition, much history is evident in Old Town, where the San Felipe de Neri Church has sat on the Plaza for centuries, where an abundance of Indian and Spanish arts and crafts can be found. and where authentic Southwest cuisine is plentiful in local restaurants.

The Turquoise Trail, a historic route through picturesque hills and several mining towns, lies to the east and north of Albuquerque. Along the trail are old turquoise mines at sites originally worked by ancient Native Americans. Another reminder of Native American history is the Petroglyph National Monument on the West Mesa where, hundreds of years ago, Native Americans left thousands of rock carvings.

Sandia Tramway to the top of Sandia Peak is the world's longest continuous aerial tram, and skirts to the top of the majestic Sandia Mountains, which tower above the central region. To the south of Albuquerque, off I-25 along the Rio Grande, lie the farming communities of Los Lunas and Belen.
