Albuquerque is located in Bernalillo County ,it is the county seat,and is in the Central New Mexico region. It lies southwest of Santa Fe along Interstate 25, on the banks of the Rio Grande River.
Spanish settlement commenced in the early 1600s, but they vacated the area when Native Americans revolted against Spanish rule in 1680. Albuquerque of today was founded in 1706 and the city was named after New Spain's viceroy, the Duke of Alburquerque. It became a (King's Highway) stopping point between Santa Fe and Mexico City.
Today Albuquerque, population 448,607, is New Mexico's largest city. It is a trade, high-tech manufacturing and transportation hub. Nearby Kirtland Air Force Base also contributes to the economy. The city is home to the University of New Mexico's main campus. Albuquerque's warm, dry weather attracts vacationers. Among many attractions is the 1793 Church of San Felipe de Neri in the historic Old Town district.
