The Township of Montclair is located in Essex County on the western city limits of Newark between Verona and Glen Ridge along Highway 148 near Staten Island. Montclair is part of the Newark, New Jersey metro area.
Montclair's history as a town began with the settling of Newark by the English in 1666. In 1694, Azariah Crane built a home at the foot of First Mountain and, with other pioneers, established Cranetown. The Bloomfield ward of Newark, encompassing Cranetown, set up its own identity as a township, and later the Cranetown section established itself as West Bloomfield, with its own post office. Railroad lines brought visitors and new settlers and West Bloomfield chose to rename itself the Township of Montclair.
