Jersey City

Jersey City is located in Hudson County, in the Gateway Region, and is the county seat. It is east of Newark, along Interstate 78 on the banks of the Hudson River near Staten Island.

Jersey City is one of the busiest transportation centers in the world. Jersey City is part of the Jersey City, New Jersey metro area.

Dutch traders established a trading post at the site of the present city during the 17th century. Robert Fulton introduced steam ferry service across the Hudson to New York City in 1812. The city was incorporated in 1820. The Hudson Tubes connecting Jersey City with New York City were completed in 1910.

The 2000 Census ranked Jersey City the fourth most crowded city in the U.S., with 16,111 people per square mile. Locals are called Jersey Cityites.
