Hackensack is the county seat of Bergen Countyin the Gateway Region, north of Jersey City between I-80 and State Route 208 and less than ten miles from the Hudson River near Upper New York Bay.

Hackensack is part of the Bergen-Passaic, New Jersey metro area.
