Sandhills Region, Nebraska, Medical
The Sandhills Region of north central Nebraska is a subregion of the Great Plains, containing the largest stabilized sand dune area in North America. It was formed when the wind began whipping sand into hills and ridges 8,000 years ago. Some of the dunes are 400 feet high and 20 miles long, have been stabilized by grasses, and are interspersed with valleys that contain streams, lakes and wetlands.
Alongside these duned grasslands lies America's largest man-made forest, Nebraska National Forest, covering 90,000 acres and providing a fine backdrop for camping, hiking and picnicking.
