Papillion is located in Sarpy County (of which it is the county seat), between Lincoln and Omaha along I-80, near the Platte River, Missouri State line and Missouri River.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 20,603, an increase of 6,711 since 1990.

Papillion is part of the Omaha, Nebraska-Iowa metro area.
