Anaconda is the seat of Deer Lodge County, and is 18 miles northwest of Butte between Opportunity and Georgetown Lake along Hwy 1 near Lost Creek State Park and Mount Haggin Recreation Area.
Originally called Copperopolis, Anaconda officially received its name from postmaster Clinton H. Moore. "Anaconda," came from a copper mine developed by Marcus Daly.
