Duluth

Duluth is located in St. Louis County and it is the county seat. It lies on the shore of Lake Superior along I-35, on the banks of the St. Louis River in Lakes of the Northern Lights Region Region.

Duluth was named after French trader Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, who visited the site around 1679.

Today Duluth, population 86,918, is a center of tourism, education, medical care, aviation, high-technology development and international shipping. Yearly, more than a thousand ships from numerous foreign countries sail under the historic Aerial Lift Bridge into Duluth's seaport. January's average low temperature is -2.2 degrees. July's high is 77.1. The city boasts 23 parks as well as sculpture and rose gardens. Attractions include the Great Lakes Aquarium, America's only all-freshwater aquarium; Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad, which offers a 90-minute tour of the St. Louis River; and Canal Park's Marine Museum, Lake Superior's top museum draw.

Duluth is part of the Duluth-Superior, Minnesota-Wisconsin metro area.
