Bloomington is located in Hennepin County southwest of Minneapolis along Hwy 212 on the banks of the Minnesota river near Shakopee in the Twin Cities Metro Region. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 86,186, a decrease of 149 since 1990.

Bloomington is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.
