Whitehall is located in Muskegon County northwest of Grand Rapids between Ludington and Muskegon along US Highway 31 on the banks of the White River near White Lake and Lake Michigan. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 3,403, an increase of 376 since 1990.

Whitehall is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland, Michigan metro area.

Whitehalls recorded history began around 1859 when Charles Mears, a noted lumber baron to the area platted the village along with Giles B. Slocum, naming it Mears. In 1862, it was renamed Whitehall. It grew because of its excellent location for floating and distributing lumber. Whitehall was incorporating as a village in 1867, and later was as a city in 1942.

Now days, Whitehall's economy is tourist-related, especially its extended marina on the lake, it also contains some small businesses and manufacturing facilities.
