Petoskey is in Emmet County (and is the county seat), and in the Northern Region. This community is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, northeast of Traverse City between Charlevoix and Indian River along US Highway 31 near Little Traverse Bay and Walloon Lake.
Petoskey was first named Porters Village when the first white settlers came to the area in 1865. As the settlement developed, and the railroad came through, the present name was established on December 5, 1873, and incorporated as a village in 1879. In 1896 Petoskey became a city and today it is going through some of the fastest growth in the state.
