Mio

Mio is in Oscoda County (of which it is the county seat), and in the Northern Region. This community is located southeast of Gaylord between Grayling and Harrisville along Highway 72 on the banks of the Au Sable River near Mio Pond and Muskrat Lake. Situated within the Au Sable National Forest.

In 1881, Mio was founded by Coolige Comins, John Randall, Henry Deyarmond and Reirlo Fosdick. A post office, with Randall as the first postmaster, was opened in 1882 under the name "Mioe," after Deyarmonds wife. A year later the name was shortened to just Mio.

Today, Mio is a popular canoeing and fishing spot, with several launch points along the river, as well as hiking trails, two-tracks and snowmobile paths. This little town also has many turn-of-the-century buildings to admire while visiting here.
