Marquette

Marquette is in Marquette County, and in the Northern Region. You can find Marquette north of Escanaba between Champion and Munising along US Highway 41 on the banks of the Dead River. Marquette is the county seat, and is situated on the shore of Lake Superior.

This community first known as "Iron Bay," and then "Worcester" was renamed in 1850 to honor Father Jacques Marquette, the famous French Jesuit missionary to this area in the late 1600s. The town was incorporated as a village in 1859 and later as a city in 1871.

Today, Marquette's economic support comes from many diverse sources, such as iron ore mining, metal fabrication, medical and human resource services, education, small business and of course tourism. It is also the home of Northern Michigan University.
