Lake City

Lake City is in Missaukee County (is the county seat), and in the Northern Region. You can find Lake City southeast of Traverse City between Cadillac and Houghton Lake along Highway 56 near Lake Missaukee.

Lake City was founded in 1868 by Daniel Reeder, who built the first log cabin there. At that time, the town's name was Reeder, with the lake called Muskrat Lake. In 1872, Lake City became the county seat by only a one vote margin against Falmouth. It was renamed Lake City in 1877 during the lumber boom, when the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad built a line through there. Lake City was incorporated into a village in 1889 and later as a city in 1932.

Today, many tourists, boaters and seasonal cottagers show up at Lake City during the summer months to enjoy the lake, which frequently seems to change hues and colors, depending on the angle of the sun.
