Cheboygan

Cheboygan is located in Cheboygan County (of which it is the county seat), and in the Northern Region. You can locate Cheboygan just south of Bois Blanc Island between Mackinaw City and Rogers City along US Highway 23 on the banks of the Black River near Lake Michigan and Mullett Lake.

The name Cheboygan stands for "Water of the Chippewas." The first settler was Jacob Sammons, a cooper from Mackinaw City who built a log cabin there in 1844, and then founded a town. The area grew productive during the lumber days, and was incorporated as a village in 1871, while later becoming a city in 1889.

Today, Cheboygan has become a major port on the Great Lakes, providing industry and becoming a coast guard station. The city's growth today includes specialization in paper production and tourism.
