The first pioneers established a settlement in 1823. In 1824, Governor Cass designated Ann Arbor as the seat for Washtenaw County. The state legislature located the University of Michigan there in 1837.

The University is the educational, cultural and economic mainstay of Ann Arbor. Its Medical Center is the largest university medical center in the world. Ann Arbor also is the world's lithography capital. Some 33,000 trees grace the city's streets. Ann Arbor has been rated one of the 10 best cycling cities in North America. Places to visit include the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Archives and the Ruthven Museum of Natural History, Michigan's largest collection of dinosaur remains. The 1493 printed version of the letter Columbus sent to Queen Isabella is housed at the Clements Library.
