Boston Region

Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and New England's largest city. It lies on Boston Bay, which forms part of Massachusetts Bay. It is a major manufacturing center and a great seaport. Lining its streets is a medley of historic buildings, red brick townhouses and glittering skyscrapers. Professionals, businesspeople and college students dine at streetcorner bistros. The city is internationally and ethnically diverse; many accents are heard here.

Boston boasts a colorful palatte of cultural destinations. Musical, dance and visual arts are served by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Ballet, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Institute of Contemporary Art, to name a few.

For students of history, the American Revolution is evoked along the red-brick Freedom Trail, which strings together a garland of 16 sites that played crucial parts in the nation's birth. The USS Constitution, the U.S. Navy's oldest commissioned ship, awaits visitors at the trail's terminus. The history of Beacon Hill's 1900s African American community is revealed along the Black Heritage Trail.

A polygot population of students, ethnic cultures and international visitors characterizes Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston.
