Provincetown was the site of the first landing of the Pilgrims. A monument stands on High Pole Hill commemorating the event. Isolated at the tip of Cape Cod, the settlements always depended upon the sea for its livelihood. Formerly a whaling port, the town is now an art colony and tourist mecca.

Miles of beach line both sides of the peninsula. Boathouse and parking facilities are at Herring Cove Beach. Along the "Back Shore," from Peaked Hill Bars to Race Point, surf casters catch striped bass from late May to mid-October. Dune tours are conducted daily. Charter boats are also available.

Provincetown is at the northern end of an especially scenic portion of US 6 that stretches through Cape Cod to Orleans.
