Abilene

Pop:6,700. Elev:1152' Abilene is located in the Central Region of the state, in Dickinson County, (of which it is the county seat) and is northeast of Salina along Highway 206. Abilene is 1,441 miles from Los Angeles and 1,474 miles from New York city.

Abilene is 25 miles NE Milford Lake, which has 8 park areas and extensive opportunities for outdoors activities. Nearby rivers include; Smoky Hill River, Solomon River and Saline River.

Over a century ago, the Chisholm Trail brought Texas Longhorn cattle and Mustang horses to Abilene's rail yards, destind for the eastern markets. Today, the community is still served by the Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroads.

Attractions include: Seelye Mansion & Museum, the Eisenhower Center and several other unique museums. Another unique attraction is the Smoky Valley Railroad, providing frequent scenic excursions.

James "Wild Bill" Hickok became famous as a "Two gun marshal" here. Abilene is the boyhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
