Pocatello is in Bannock County and is the county seat. It lies along I-15 on the Portneuf River. Fort Hall Indian Reservation is north and west of Pocatello.

The city was founded as a railroad center in 1882 and is named for a Bannock Native American leader. It was incorporated in 1893.

Rumor has it that Edgar Rice Burroughs started writing "Tarzan of the Apes" while running a stationery store here. The lion's share of the city's industrial growth commenced in the 1940s.

Today Pocatello, population 51,466, is the state's second largest city and southeast Idaho's premier transportation, commercial and cultural center. Attractions include a railroad display at Ross Park, which includes two locomotives and a historic caboose. The city boasts 31 other parks, a museum of natural history and the Fort Hall Replica. American Falls Reservoir and other outdoor-recreation spots are nearby. Idaho State University is at Pocatello.
